The Melavì production area is the Valtellina, a mountainous territory that produces high quality apples. Loose, permeable soil, well distributed rainfall during the growing season, the protection provided by the Rhaetian Alps to the north and the Orobian Prealps to the south, the favourable influence of the breeze from Lake Como − which blows along the entire valley in the afternoon − and the good night-day temperature range during harvest time all make the valley climate ideal for apple growing, enhancing the fruit’s flavour, colour and appearance.
The Melavì production area extends from the middle of the valley up to the higher stretches. The apple orchards − planted mainly on alluvional cones extending towards the mountain slopes up to 900 m − provide us with truly marvellous gifts of nature, that is premium quality, intensely flavoured apples with firm flesh that are well suited to storage. The areas where apples have historically been grown are the alluvional cones of Ponte in Valtellina and Bianzone, as well as the area near Villa di Tirano, and the Sernio and Lovero alluvional cones.
